Overview:
The session addressed the growing challenges faced by religious minorities in India, especially Christians, under the current socio-political climate. Rev. DR. Suresh Mathew highlighted increasing religious intolerance and provided insights on constitutional protections and strategic responses.
Key Points:
• Constitutional Rights (Articles 25–28): Emphasized freedom of religion, management of religious affairs, and secularism in education and taxation.
• Violence Against Christians:
o 245 incidents reported between Jan–Apr 2025 across 19 states (UCF data)
o Over 900 arrests under anti-conversion laws, many unjustified
o Notable incidents: arrest of Fr. Anit CMI, threats in Assam, attacks in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, and forced religious activities in Christian schools
Suggested Strategies:
• Promote interfaith and ecumenical dialogue
• Document and report religious atrocities
• Empower Dalit Christians
• Educate on political rights and secular values
• Challenge biased narratives and support democratic values
Outcome:
The session was informative and eye-opening. It deepened our awareness of the issues faced by Christians in India and inspired active engagement in advocacy, dialogue, and protection of religious freedom.
